AI IN EDUCATION AND RESEARCH: TOWARDS RESPONSIBLE, TRANSPARENT, AND ETHICAL AI USE

With the message, “AI does not replace people in education and research; it empowers them when used responsibly, transparently, and ethically,” Thanh Do University hosted the seminar “AI in Education and Research: Policies, Ethics, and Academic Integrity” as part of its Responsible AI Applications and Governance seminar series.

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape higher education and research, the University recognizes that effective AI adoption must be grounded in ethics, academic integrity, and professional responsibility. The hybrid seminar brought together faculty members, postgraduate students, researchers, and undergraduates to discuss the opportunities and challenges of integrating AI into teaching, research, and university governance.

International Perspectives on Generative AI

In his presentation, “Generative AI in Education and Research – UNESCO Guidelines,” Mr. Nguyen Van Dien, Vice Director of the IBS, reviewed global developments in generative AI and their impact on higher education.

Drawing on recommendations from UNESCO, the OECD, and other international organizations, he highlighted AI’s potential to transform teaching, personalize learning, strengthen research, and improve university management. He also emphasized the importance of institutional AI policies that prioritize transparency, fairness, and a human-centered approach.

Academic Integrity in the AI Era

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hao from the Office of Science and Technology presented “Academic Integrity and AI Ethics in the Age of AI,” addressing the ethical challenges posed by generative AI in learning, assessment, and research.

Her presentation emphasized the importance of responsible AI use, proper citation, respect for intellectual property, research transparency, and the shared responsibility of educators, students, and institutions in maintaining academic integrity. She also discussed data privacy, AI ethics, and professional responsibility as essential foundations for sustainable digital education.

Panel Discussion: How Far Should AI Go in Universities?

A highlight of the seminar was the panel discussion, “How Far Should AI Be Used in Universities?”

Faculty members and students exchanged views on the appropriate role of AI in teaching, learning, research, and university management. Participants agreed that AI should enhance—not replace—critical thinking, creativity, and human judgment. Practical experiences in using AI effectively and responsibly were also shared, promoting a culture of transparent and evidence-based AI use.

Faculty members and students participate in the panel discussion “How Far Should AI Be Used in Universities?”

The discussion concluded with remarks from Prof. Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Thao, President of Thanh Do University, who reaffirmed the University's position: AI is encouraged as a tool to improve learning, teaching, research, and administration, provided it is used responsibly, transparently, and in compliance with university regulations, Vietnamese law, and international standards on AI ethics, academic integrity, and data protection.

To encourage active participation, the organizers awarded Cambridge Linguaskill exam vouchers to attendees who contributed insightful questions and discussions, reinforcing the connection between digital competence and English-language proficiency.

Building a Responsible AI Ecosystem

Thanh Do University is progressively integrating AI into teaching, research, and university operations while strengthening AI literacy among faculty, staff, and students. At the same time, the University is developing institutional policies on AI governance, academic integrity, data protection, and ethical AI use to ensure technology supports education without compromising its core values.

In her closing remarks, Prof. Dr. Phan Thi Thanh Thao introduced the University's framework of five principles and ten recommendations for responsible AI use, promoting a culture of AI that is intelligent, responsible, transparent, ethical, and secure.
