3. Development History

30/11/2004 – 2008: Foundation and Early Innovation

Thanh Do University was originally established as Thanh Do Private College of Technology on November 30, 2004. In 2006, the institution was renamed Thanh Do College of Technology, signifying its strategic expansion in academic programs, training capacity, and faculty development. Notably, it became the first private institution in Vietnam to submit an official proposal to transition from college to university status. In 2008, the university established the Thanh Do Driving Training Center, becoming the only private university in the country to operate a licensed driving training facility.

27/05/2009 – 2014: Institutional Recognition and Academic Expansion

Thanh Do University was officially established by the Prime Minister’s Decision No. 679/QĐ-TTg, dated May 27, 2009, based on the upgrade of Thanh Do College of Technology. In 2012, the university earned national recognition by winning Vietnam’s first Eco-Driving and Fuel Efficiency Competition and was selected as the sole representative of Vietnamese higher education institutions to participate in the international round held in Tokyo, Japan. In 2013, Thanh Do University expanded its academic offerings and training capacity by introducing programs in Pharmacy and Nursing, thereby becoming the first private university in Vietnam to provide education in the Health Sciences.

2014 – 2019: Pedagogical Innovation and Strategic Partnership 

Thanh Do University has consistently and continuously advanced pedagogical innovation through the adoption of blended learning models and the enhancement of scientific research activities. In 2017, the university successfully organized an international conference on stem cell technology derived from umbilical cord membranes, marking a significant milestone in its research initiatives. In 2018, Thanh Do University signed cooperation agreements with over 500 Korean enterprises under the K-Biz Association, positioning itself as one of the first universities in Vietnam to formally commit to graduate employment pathways. In 2019, the university undertook a comprehensive restructuring of its governance system and officially introduced the Thanh Do Cultural Handbook, becoming the first university in Vietnam to institutionalize a campus-wide cultural framework.

2020 – 2024: Advancing Quality, Expanding Horizons 

 In 2020, Thanh Do University was awarded a three-star “Application-Oriented” rating on the University Performance Metrics (UPM) chart. The following year, it achieved national accreditation for institutional quality assurance in accordance with the Vietnamese Higher Education Quality Standards. In 2022, furthering its academic development, the university became an international member of the European SPARC Academic Publishing Alliance, launched the Journal of Scientific Research and Development, and secured accreditation for three undergraduate programs. By 2023, Thanh Do University was ranked among the Top 20 leading private universities in ASEAN by AppliedHE and received additional accreditations for two undergraduate programs and one master program; the first group of doctoral students also enrolled by the end of this year, making the university circle of educational levels achieve. In 2024, the university completed its institutional development project, celebrated its 20th anniversary, and was honorably awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Minister of Education and Training. To commemorate its founding, May 27—the date of the university’s official name establishment—was formally designated as Thanh Do Family Day, a celebration of the university’s distinct institutional identity and cultural values.
