Scientific research plays a vital role within universities, serving as a valuable and indispensable endeavor that enhances professional qualifications, skills, and overall development for staff and lecturers. Teaching and research are intertwined activities that mutually reinforce one another in the training programs offered by universities.
The importance of providing guidance on the utilization of scientific research support tools cannot be overstated when it comes to completing research papers and articles intended for publication in international journals. Employing these tools facilitates a smoother and more efficient research process. Various tools are available to assist in organizing and managing research data, simplifying and expediting data analysis and evaluation, and ensuring the accurate and efficient completion of studies.
Taking the helm of the Seminar’s content are Dr. Pham Hung Hiep, the esteemed Permanent Vice President, and MSc. Nguyen Linh Chi, a dedicated researcher from the Institute for Research and Knowledge Transfer.
The contents are meticulously analyzed and, simultaneously, each part and item are practiced, directly applied to the articles and research papers produced by the staff and lecturers themselves.
The seminar “Utilizing Tools for Scientific Research Support” imparts essential knowledge and skills for using research support tools. It focuses on in-depth analysis and practical application of three main tools:
The first step is to create a Google Scholar account, an invaluable method for discovering and staying updated on the latest research in the respective field. Once an account is established, staff and lecturers can explore scientific documents from various sources such as journals, academic websites, conference papers, references, and articles authored by researchers worldwide. These documents are organized based on their relevance and priority, determined by the search keywords used.
By creating an account on Google Scholar, users can not only follow their favorite authors but also receive notifications about their latest works. This feature enables the creation of a personalized list of favorite documents, which can be shared with colleagues or individuals interested in the same research field.
Moreover, establishing an account on Google Scholar contributes to building one’s reputation and enhances the likelihood of being cited in other scientific papers. Given that documents found on Google Scholar are frequently referenced in research and conference papers, having multiple citations from one’s own literature can substantially bolster the reputation and standing of researchers.
Secondly, Thanh Do University employs the Plagiarism Checker application, utilizing an official account to facilitate the checking of articles, research papers, projects, theses, and dissertations within the institution. Turnitin, a text similarity analysis tool, is utilized to identify instances of duplicate content in articles, reports, theses, journals, and other scholarly documents. The use of Turnitin in scientific research holds significant importance in ensuring the authenticity and credibility of research outcomes.
MSc. Nguyen Linh Chi also highlighted the role of Turnitin in safeguarding copyright protection for authors and research materials. When documents are submitted to Turnitin, the tool compares the text within the document with the existing database of stored documents. If any content within the document is identified as copied from another source, users can identify the source and remove the duplicated text to prevent copyright infringement.
The final tool discussed in the Seminar is Mendeley, an extensively used citation, document management, and bibliography application in the scientific research community. Mendeley enables users to efficiently handle their documents by offering features such as storage, organization, searchability, and sharing of references. It also provides support for writing reports, theses, research papers, and scientific articles.
Incorporating Mendeley into scientific research endeavors brings about time-saving benefits. The application streamlines the organization, storage, and management of documents, simplifying the process of finding and accessing references.
Moreover, Mendeley ensures the precision and efficacy of references. Documents uploaded into the application are automatically labeled with vital information such as author names, article titles, journal titles, and publication years. This guarantees that the references cited within articles, reports, or outlines maintain a high level of accuracy.
The guidance on utilizing tools to support scientific research serves as a valuable means to enhance the skills of staff, lecturers, as well as students who are newly venturing into the realm of scientific research. These tools aid in acquiring the essential skills necessary for the research process, enabling a professional and effective approach to research projects. By utilizing these tools, the quality of research work is enhanced, facilitating more accurate and scientific data evaluation, thus ensuring the accuracy and relevance of the research conducted. Additionally, the use of support tools fosters consistency and transparency throughout the research process, enabling proper evaluation and confirmation of research outcomes with a high level of confidence.
By attentively listening to the practical insights shared by experts from the Institute of Research and Knowledge Transfer and engaging in hands-on exercises, faculty members at Chengdu University acquire invaluable knowledge and practical skills that enhance their aptitude for scientific research. This further enhances both the quality and quantity of articles published in international journals and research publications.
Teaching the utilization of tools to support scientific research is an essential and crucial endeavor for universities. It ensures the quality and effectiveness of scientific research while also reinforcing the university’s standing and position within the international research community.
