TDD PHARMACY STUDENTS JOIN “YAKULT HONSHA FACTORY ONLINE TOUR”

05/06/2025

On the morning of June 4, pharmacy students had a special experience participating in the Yakult Honsha Factory Online Tour, featuring representatives from Yakult Honsha Co., Ltd. (Japan) and its Vietnam branch. The session provided valuable insights into the research and commercialization of health care products.

Yakult Honsha is a leading Japanese company and a pioneer in the field of probiotics, with over 80 years of experience in the research and development of fermented milk drinks. Its business philosophy, based on Professor Minoru Shirota’s principles, known as the Shirota Theory, emphasizes: preventive medicine, the link between gut health and longevity, and affordability for the public.

To help students connect academic learning with practical applications, Thanh Do University partnered with Yakult to organize this virtual factory tour. The aim was to enrich students’ understanding of Yakult’s production process and business model while guiding their career orientation in pharmaceutical sciences.

During the tour, students explored Yakult’s closed-loop production line, from strain cultivation, bottle creation, fermentation, and mixing, to filling, quality control, and packaging. They also learned about the development of the L. casei Shirota strain and Yakult’s focus on research-based health benefits of probiotics.

In the Q&A session, the students have asked many questions about production techniques, the latest technologies in probiotic manufacturing, and the potential for innovation and commercialization in health-related products. Company representatives provided clear and practical examples that helped students better understand the industry.

The program not only expanded students’ knowledge of biotechnology applications in health care, but also bridged theory and practice. It was an opportunity to develop applied pharmaceutical thinking, explore GMP standards in functional food production, and discover how a company manages its value chain from research to distribution.
